Breathable film/nonwoven composites

Reifenhäuser has developed an alternative production strategy to enable production of breathable film/nonwoven composites at reduced cost. Special qualities are demanded of these film/nonwoven composites, for example:
Barrier properties against fluids |
Permeability for gas, air, heat and humidity |
High tensile strength |
Textile-like appearance, good grip |
Trouble-free product finishing |
For the coating of a backing web (spunbonded fabric), filled polyolefin films (PP or PE with up to 60% filler - CaCO3) are mainly used. The web is coated by a modified casting roll process in combination with the electrostatic pinning process. In this process the film/nonwoven composite is fabricated contactless directly from the melt without mechanical pressure. An electrostatic field presses the film into the backing web. Immediately thereafter, the composite is stretched mono-axially. Extremely fine pores are the result, because the fillers that are incorporated into the film polymer (CaCO3 particles) cannot stretch. The pores that are thus formed ensure permeability for steam and gases and are simultaneously a barrier against fluids, depending on the surface tension. |
